Physikalisch-Technische Bundesanstalt

The Physikalisch-Technische Bundesanstalt (PTB) is the national metrology institute of the Federal Republic of Germany and stands for progress and reliability in measurement technology for society, business and science. The “Metrology for Magnetic Nanoparticles” working group is involved in several research and industrial collaborations with the further development of measurement technology for the characterization, quantification, imaging and standardization of magnetic nanoparticles for biomedical applications.

As part of the TherSys project, PTB has set itself the goal of developing a special drug release analysis for magnetic nanotherapeutics to determine the magnetically induced release of active ingredients. For this purpose, the existing measurement infrastructure will be used for the magnetic characterization of the nanotherapeutics to be developed in the project.

Furthermore, with the help of specific imaging of these nanotherapeutics using the imaging method Magnetic Particle Imaging (MPI), time-resolved detection of active ingredient release and separate active ingredient carrier localization will be achieved via multitracer-MPI. Furthermore, the PTB would like to establish magnetic relaxometry imaging (MRXI) as an additional imaging modality for theranostics in human applications with high translational potential.
