The company was founded in 1977 with the aim of producing high quality phospholipids on an industrial scale. Today, the Lipoid Group, based in Ludwigshafen, is the only supplier in the world that, with around 500 employees, produces an extensive product range of natural, hydrogenated and synthetic cGMP phospholipids on an industrial scale.

Phospholipids represent an essential basis for innovative drug carrier systems such as liposomes, mixed micelles and lipid nanoparticles. By providing phospholipids, Lipoid has made a decisive contribution to the commercialization of complex drugs.

Phospholipid-based systems play an important role, e.g. in the area of tumor therapeutics, inhalants and parenteral nutrition. In addition, Lipoid’s products are significantly involved in Covid-19 mRNA vaccines and vaccines that contain adjuvants.

Lipoid GmbH has proven its expertise in the production of difficult-to-purify lipids under GMP and according to ISO 9001 with many commercialized phospholipids. Lipoid also has the corresponding analytical expertise.

With its participation in the KmR project ZiEL, Lipoid applies its skills to the consortium to develop processes and methods suitable for the production of identified lipids of appropriate pharmaceutical quality.

As an established provider of lipids for commercialized mRNA carrier systems such as lipid nanoparticles and with the consistent focus on the highest quality requirements and proximity to science, it is a particular pleasure for Lipoid to be able to contribute to the success of the targeted development of new lipids.
